My nearly 11 year old 32" tv is dying, I think. The past few weeks I’ve notice diagonal static looking lines on dark backgrounds. The picture has gone crazy and then black. Not sure if it’s the 1 hdmi port acting up or the screen itself. I’ve tried 2 different hdmi cables and I’ve swapped the PS3 and Apple TV.

Any ideas on what could be happening ?

I’ve started looking at larger replacements so any recommendations or warnings would be welcome. I’m thinking a 48" Vizio E series. I don't think I want any bigger and I'd rather not spend more than$500. I don't think there's enough 4K content out yet to pay for the extra resolution and at that screen size you can't tell the difference anyway.

They did. They were generous and gave me 1 along with 4 or 5 other inputs no one uses anymore.

What do the other inputs show, same problem or are they clean?

I haven’t tried any others. I could try hooking up the wii. It doesn’t do it consistently or even daily. I’ve only had the whole screen die on me 3 times. I thought maybe it was the new Apple TV at first but I was able to replicate the screen artifacts with the PS3. While it was in mess up mode I swapped the Apple TV with PS3 and the lines were still there. I have another small (15") tv I'm gonna bring out tonight after work to check with the Apple TV as well.

11 years is a lot to ask of the backlight. 500 is plenty for a replacement. Here’s a 50 inch Samsung under budget:

Also does it fuzz out when you turn on a florescent light, welder or hid light nearby?

Nope. Does it randomly as far as I can tell. The past couple days (not today) it has done weird stuff shortly after turning it on until it “warms up” but previous issues have occurred after having it on a while. The first time it totally flipped out was while I was trying out a racing app on the new Apple TV which is why I originally thought the new thing caused it.

TVs can be such a pain. I have two ancient tvs (both were manufactured in the late ‘80s) that work fine. The issue I’m having is our cable company is switching to all-digital. I spent my morning wiring up new digital cable boxes for the old tvs. HDMI? I was lucky to find video in on one of them. The other one uses the cable out on the mini box and everything comes through on channel 3.

My thought is that if it works over component or whatever... You have localized it to th HDMI port.

I think my PC port supports 1080 you could try looking for an adapter maybe?

Well, the intermittent issues it’s having is causing issues in trying to diagnose the problem. No issues today and it didn't cause a problem yesterday for me. My gf said it did it to her but she unplugged the hdmi cable and plugged it back in and it went away. Makes me think it may be the port.

A buddy of mine was recently offered a non-functioning tv- he took it home, removed the back and then just snugged down every connector he could find. Put it back together and it now works perfectly.....
